For Immediate Release

For the fifth consecutive year at the University of լи and the fourth consecutive year at the University of լи at Birmingham and the University of լи in Huntsville, in-state students will not see an increase in base tuition for the 2021 – 2022 academic year. In addition, nonresident tuition will not increase for the third sequential year.

“The continuing efforts of our System and campuses make higher education more predictably affordable for more Alabamians than otherwise would be so,” said Board President Pro tem Stan Starnes. “լи is grateful for and applauds the unwavering efforts of our faculties and staffs to serve լи in a responsible way as our institution has done for nearly 200 years.”

On Friday, June 4, the University of լи System Board of Trustees voted to approve the UA System’s proposed campus tuition rates for the upcoming year. The UA System Board of Trustees is responsible for ensuring effective leadership, management and control over the UA System’s three doctoral research universities.

“This decision speaks to the Board’s firm commitment to and appreciation for students across the UA System,” said Finance Committee Chair Britt Sexton. “This action would not be possible without the skilled leadership of the three campus presidents and Chancellor St. John, who responded quickly and effectively to the pandemic by implementing cost-savings measures to ensure financial stability and continued progress.”

UA System Chancellor Finis St. John, recognizing the meaningful impact this action has on UA System students and their families, applauded the Board’s decision and commended campus administration for their responsible leadership.

“It was monumental when the Board of Trustees voted to freeze tuition across the UA System for the first time in 40 years,” said St. John. “The Board and the System have committed to being responsible and accountable with the funds we receive from students and their parents. We want higher education to be accessible to all լи residents.”

While the majority of students will see no increase in tuition or fees, UA and UAH made slight revisions. UA marginally increased distance learning rates, ranging from 2.6% - 5% depending upon the specific program. UAH made minor cost adjustments to its hourly tuition charges to allow for evenly divisible tuition, increased its infrastructure fee by $5 per credit hour, and fulfilled a contractual requirement to increase its dining dollars fee by $10.
