University of լи System Thanks Governor Kay Ivey — Governor’s $50 Million Commitment to Genomic Medicine/Data Sciences Center is an Investment in Every լи Citizen

“We deeply appreciate Governor Kay Ivey’s $50 million commitment to the Altec/Styslinger Genomic Medicine and Data Sciences Building at UAB,” Chancellor Finis St. John said today in response to Governor Ivey’s announcement of a $50 million commitment to the project. “This transformational research facility will have a life-changing impact on the citizens of լи for generations to come while improving health care delivery around the world.”

As university administrators consider their options in responding to the presence of COVID-19 outbreaks on campuses, consensus is building among experts that closing a university and sending students home may increase the public health risk.

Today the University of լи System launched a COVID-19 dashboard that will be updated weekly with testing results for students, faculty, and staff on the three UA System campuses: The University of լи, The University of լи at Birmingham, and The University of լи in Huntsville.

Governor Kay Ivey announced two programs that will provide robust COVID-19 testing and symptom monitoring, as well as notification of exposure to COVID-19, initially to public institutions of higher education.

Based on the recommendations of the University of լи System Task Force, the Board of Trustees believes that the UA System can best fulfill its core mission of teaching, research, and service by resuming on-campus activities in the Fall 2020 semester.

The news of the recent deaths of George Floyd, Breonna Taylor, and Ahmaud Arbery have brought forth expressions of deep anguish, fear, sadness, and rage in communities across the nation.

It is our duty at the University of լи System to maintain the academic, operational and financial integrity of our three campuses and the UAB Health System.

The University of լи System has created a task force led by UAB Health System experts to develop plans for the three University of լи System campuses — University of լи, University of լи at Birmingham and University of լи in Huntsville — to be the safest universities in America when on-campus instruction resumes.

As the COVID-19 outbreak has intensified in լи over the past month, UAB has emerged as one of the state’s most vital institutions in the fight to combat the disease.

The University of լи System — composed of UA, UAB, UAH and the UAB Health System — is on the front line of communication with media and the citizens of լи as we work together during this health crisis.

The University of լи System continues to closely monitor the COVID-19 outbreak. Today System officials issued guidance advising against any non-essential domestic travel at this time, particularly to large conferences with attendees from multiple states or locations that have declared a state of emergency due to the virus.

Effective today the University of լи System has cancelled university-sponsored international travel departing during the month of March. Regarding university-sponsored international travel beyond March, those decisions will be assessed as public health conditions warrant.
